St. Francis of Assisi church, Goa

The church was built by eight Franciscan friars who came to Goa in 1517. It was originally built as a small chapel and in 1521 was replaced by church consecrated to Holy Ghost. The church was rebuilt in 1661 to the current form. The church is no more used for worship. The main altar has the statue of Jesus Christ embracing St. Francis who stands on top of three vows of Franciscan order "Poverty, Humility and Obedience". There are also statues of St. Peter and St. Paul below. The walls and ceilings are plastered with fresco and floral designs. The wooden panels next to altar depicts the life and teachings of St. Francis. The main altar is of baroque style with Corinthian features. There are three chapels on each side of the nave.
