Weekend Getaway: 19. Belum Caves and Gandikota: Part 1

Date:  3rd Jan 2015 - 4th Jan 2015

Travelers: Arun, Shilpi, Harsh, Muthusamy and Vijayalakshmi

Route: Bangalore - Devanahalli - Anantapur - Tadipatri - Belum - Jammalmadugu - Gandikota

Distance: 380Km one way.

Road Condition: Excellent till Anantapur. After devanahalli the road was covered by fog with poor visibility. The drive was enjoyable.

Anantapur to Tadipatri road was under construction and few parts was ok but not very bad.

After making multiple stops to see the vegetation, cement and granite factories in that area we finally reached Belum caves.
There were no sign boards and you need to depend on people for direction. Luckily we have too many of them to help.

Entry fee is 50Rs per adult and 35Rs for child.

The guide service is free here. You can explore the cave on your own and you will not get lost.

Climb down few steps to enter the cave.

This is the second longest natural cave in India.

Longest natural cave on the plains.
The cave is well lit with flood lights and only very few corners are dark.

 Artificial fountain setup by APTDC.
Way to meditation hall was very narrow.

Shilpi entering the hall.
It was bit hot but not as bad as it might be in summer. We started the walk around 1 PM.

May be Dec-Jan is the correct time to visit here.

Shilpi and I were sweating so much.
This is a pipe which blows air from outside. What a relief.
The path is also very wide and gets narrow only at few places.

The cave was formed because of underground water flow. The rocks are very smooth.

A pillar kind of structure formed.

Pathala Ganga. Linga structure formed in rock.
A very narrow staircase leading to kotilinga hall.
Banyan tree form.
Stalactite forming koti linga.

Light on the roof illuminating the path.

 On the way back.

The visit will take a good 2 - 2:30 Hrs. Carry water.

Family resting after exploring the cave.
Buddha statue at the entrance of the cave is another attraction.

There is one restaurant and a juice/icecream shop to quench your hunger and thirst.

There is also a small play area for kids.

Started to Gandikota.
