Bara Kaman, 12 arches is the mausoleum of Ali Adil Shah II. Ali Adil Shah II, 8th ruler of the Adil shahi dynasty envisioned an unique mausoleum with 12 horizontal and 12 vertical arches surrounding his tomb. The original plan was to build the structure so big that its shadow will fall on Gol Gumbaz 2.5 kms away. How ever for reasons unknown the structure was not completed.

One popular myth is Ali was killed by his father Mohammed Adil Shah who built Gol Gumbaz. He did not want bara kaman dwarfing his creation and shadow falling on it.

The mausoleum houses the tomb of the king, his wife and children.

Its believed that the solid walls in the shape of arch was erected first. The inner part knocked off   later leaving the outer arch.  The two walls in below picture shows the solid wall with outer arch.

The monument and the surrounding garden is well maintained. We wanted to spend some more time but the rain was playing hide and seek with us so we had to leave soon.

We were here.
An interesting place to visit in Bijapur.
