Fee: Parking Rs 25. Entry Free.

We started of our 2016 with visit to the Gneelivaneswarar temple 20Kms from Trichy. Since everyone had woken up very early the previous day we planned to start bit late on day 2. We woke up late and got ready and left to them temple around 8. The drive to the temple was beautiful with green fields on both sides of the narrow village road. Had breakfast in a small hotel before the temple. The poori and dosa was too good. Five of us had a filling breakfast for Rs150. There is a parking inside the temple compound. There are multiple shrines inside the complex apart from the main temple. All the additional shrines except one was closed.

The one temple open is the adikaravallavar temple. The story of the temple is

Lord Shiva killed lord Yama in Thirukadayur to let Markandeya live for ever. Because of this there was no death on earth and Goddess Bhoomadevi was over burdened. Lord Vishnu, Bhramha and Bhoomadevi and others went to Lord Shiva and asked him to help. Lord Shiva then brought back lord Yama in the child form in this temple and gave him all the power to take back life on earth. Lord Yama lying under the feet of Lord shiva can bee seen in this temple. There is no navaghraha in this temple since lord yama was in child form. 9 deepam lamp infront of Nandhi is worshiped as Navagraha here.

Some pictures from the temple visit.

Unfinished Gopuram at the entrance.

Some of the carvings in the main gopuram.

Some pics of the other closed shrines

Sthala Viruksha tree the plantain tree. Seven devikas who were not married prayed to goddess ambika and the goddess blessed them they will be happily married. Then gave them a boon that they can stay here in the form of plantain tree and have darshan of the goddess forever. We saw lot of people performing pooja in this temple to remove the hurdles for their marriage.
